When to book in Hudson Valley

September and October are the Hudson Valley's peak, and a foliage Saturday at a Dutchess or Columbia County estate books 12 to 18 months ahead, with June close behind. Leaf-peeping traffic, the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck in late August and graduation weekends at Vassar, Bard and West Point all squeeze lodging, so reserve room blocks early. Winter brings snow and slow mountain roads but also lower venue minimums, and April and early May, when the orchards bloom, are underused. A Friday or Sunday in peak season is often the difference between the venue you want and the one that's left.

The Hudson Valley is no longer the cheap alternative to the city.
