Introduction

Tucked in the Orion community of Ashe County sits a thoughtfully renovated schoolhouse and chapel, built respectively in the mid-1800’s and 1902. The community of Orion was named by farmers who worked lands both on and off the mountain. It is thought that Orion got it’s name from being “up near the stars” in the mountains. Since the school and chapel closed their doors for their original purposes in the mid 1900's, the spaces have known a variety of uses and played host to many people. We are immensely grateful for the hands that took care of and passed these buildings down through the years. The schoolhouse and chapel transitioned ownership and were thoughtfully restored in 2019, with the integrity, history, and local significance of the buildings in mind. Since the renovation, these spaces are once again open for community gatherings of all kinds, including weddings, music events, dances, birthday parties, and more. The Orion Schoolhouse and Chapel welcome all folks from all walks of life. Orion Schoolhouse and Chapel is best for couples interested in a small, intimate wedding. We host weddings with 75 or fewer guests. The schoolhouse seats about 50 people inside with additional seating outside if needed. The chapel is often used for the ceremony itself, while the schoolhouse is perfect for rehearsal dinners, cocktail hours, "getting ready" pictures, and small receptions. The chapel is just a hop, skip, and jump away from the schoolhouse, down a beautifully wooded path. Though it is less than a five minute walk for most, we suggest you take time to slow down and enjoy the trees, ferns, rhododendrons, and mushrooms that pop up along the way. We rent Orion Schoolhouse and Chapel for wedding weekends, meaning you get the spaces for the whole weekend! All day Friday for set up and rehearsal, all day Saturday for wedding events, and all day Sunday for clean up and send-off celebrations. Please inquire about specific dates for pricing and touring the spaces in person. Orion is located at the base of Mount Jefferson in Ashe County, North Carolina. The South Fork of the New River, a National Wild and Scenic River, flows only 1/4 mile from the schoolhouse and chapel. The area is cherished by hikers, climbers, hunters, fishers, foragers, and any other outdoor enthusiasts. Orion is only a 10 minute drive from West Jefferson, a 20 minute drive from Lansing, and a 30 minute drive from Boone, all with lovely shopping, dining, vacation rentals, and other attractions.
